Lung cancer with metastasis: understanding the tumor that killed Glória Maria
Glória Maria Morreu due to a metastasis in the brain, originating from a cancer in the lung.
One of the greatest Brazilian journalists, Glória Maria died at this fifth fair (2/2), in the presence of a lung cancer that resulted in a brain metastasis. She was diagnosed in 2019, and she was treated with immunotherapy, a method that stimulates ones own immune system to fight cancer cells.
In the same year, Glória discovered that cancer had metastasized to her brain. She underwent neurosurgery to remove the tumor — the procedure was continued, and the journalist underwent a cycle of treatment with immunotherapy and radiotherapy to prevent the cancer from returning.
However, in the middle of last year, new metastases were detected in Glória's brain, which recessed. However, her body did not respond positively to therapy as before.
Metastasis of lung cancer
The neurologist Jane Lúcia Machado explains that our brain is made up of various types of cells, such as neurons, epithelial cells, meningeal cells and glandular units, such as pituitary cells, etc. According to the doctor, non-brain cancer depends on which cell type undergoes differentiation and becomes a tumor.
“Therefore, there are cancers of other organs, for example the lungs, in which the cells migrate from their places of origin through the bloodstream and settle in the brain. They then multiply, forming a tumor called metastatic or secondary”, says Jane Lúcia.
Many times, the tumor, both primary and secondary, is silent, and the diagnosis is only done when the cancer is already highly developed in the patient, in an extreme situation.
The neurosurgery and neuroscience master at Unicamp Henrique Lira explains that brain metastases in the majority of cases are malignant and require surgical treatment associated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
According to the doctor, as soon as you suspect a brain tumor, it is necessary to do tests to guarantee an early diagnosis. Neurological signs of cancer are usually typical and have progressive evolution.
“Some of these diseases are a headache that the patient never has, epiletic syndromes, a convulsive crisis, some motor neurological alteration (such as a weakness to in some parts of the body, an alteration in the level of consciousness and cognitive abilities”, he explains. Lira.
The oncologist of the Cancer Center of Brasília Murilo Buso ends by saying that lung cancer is a pathology with a high rate of dissemination and does not have a standard. “This type of behavior is due to the variation of the two molecular profiles and differs for each individual. Therefore, early diagnosis is important — once the mutation pattern is identified, it is possible to choose the treatment that will guarantee the best response for the patient”, he concludes.
