Will he now lose his Oscar too?

Will Smith has resigned from the Oscar Academy.  He also apologizes again and says he would accept any further consequences.

That slap shocked the world.  Will Smith (right) took to the stage at the Oscars and beat Chris Rock (left).

Will Smith (53) slapped comedian Chris Rock (57) on the Oscars stage.  Now the actor is said to have resigned from the academy.  This is reported by TMZ.

He writes to the Academy's Disciplinary Committee: "I will fully accept any consequences for my behavior.  My behavior at the 94th Academy Awards was shocking, painful and inexcusable."

With these words, Will Smith resigns

Then comes the official retirement: "I want to bring the focus back to those who deserve recognition for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work they do to support creativity and artistry in film.  Therefore, I resign my membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept any further consequences that the board deems appropriate."

The Academy announced consequences a few days after the slap.  Disciplinary proceedings were recently instituted against Will Smith.  One possible consequence mentioned was the actor's expulsion from the Academy.  Now the Academy doesn't have to kick him out anymore.

 He can still win Oscars

Smith isn't giving up his Oscar for best actor when he retires from the Academy.  It simply means that in the future he will no longer belong to the committee that decides on the awarding of the coveted awards.  He can continue to come to the gala in the future – and continue to receive awards there.

It is unlikely that Will Smith will have to give up his Oscar.  Whoopi Goldberg (66) recently stated that he could keep him.  "We're not going to take the Oscar away from him," she said on the TV show The View.  In his statement, Smith did not even speak of returning his award.

That's how the Oscar freak happened

The slap came after Chris Rock joked on stage about the hairstyle of Jada Pinkett Smith (50), Will Smith's wife.  She suffers from circular hair loss and is therefore bald.  After Rock alluded to this, Will Smith stepped onto the stage and slapped him.

A day after the slap, Will Smith apologized to Chris Rock.  He wrote: "I want to apologize to you publicly, Chris."  And further: “I misbehaved and was wrong.  I'm embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be."
