Razzies 'discuss' how to address their Bruce Willis award - Entertainment News

 

It was announced on Wednesday that Bruce Willis is retiring from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia, a rare cognitive disorder that erodes the ability to speak and understand language. The news triggered an avalanche of appreciation for the beloved actor. Some former colleagues even apologized for things they had said about him in the past.

And then there are the raids. For more than four decades, the Golden Raspberry Awards have been the anti-Oscars, "honouring" what they perceived as the worst in cinema. This year's list, which announced its "winners" just days ago, included an entire category dedicated to Willis, who has mostly made smaller films, often straight to stream, often several a year for the past few years. Deciding to downplay this, the Razzies chose eight of those films to compete for the award, titled Worst Performance By Bruce Willis In A Movie Of 2021.

After Willis' condition was made public, the Razzies tried to reach out to him, although their response was not well received.

"The Razzies are truly sorry for the condition diagnosed by #BruceWilli," the awards site wrote on its social media account. "Maybe that explains why he wanted to go out with a bang in 2021. Our best wishes to Bruce and his family.”

In a subsequent exchange with IndieWire , Razzies co-founders John JB Wilson and Mo Murphy doubled down on their support for Willis and his family, but oddly added, albeit seemingly in defense of their category, "In defense of Willis, maybe his would have Agents shouldn't let him do such a high volume of work in such a short amount of time."

They later added, "We're still discussing how to handle the news of Willis' diagnosis and will get back to you."

Speaking to Vulture in late February, shortly after this year's nominees were announced, Wilson and Murphy admitted they regretted at least one nomination: Shelley Duvall 's The Shining , after finding out that demanding director Stanley Kubrick had given her a psychic was subjected to stress. So it's not impossible that they'd at least apologize for a dig that was at least ill-timed, if not worse.
